Ants Blow My Mind

"It is certain that there may be extraordinary activity with an extremely small absolute mass of nervous matter; thus the wonderfully diversified instincts, mental powers, and affections of ants are notorious, yet their cerebral ganglia are not so large as the quarter of a small pin's head. Under this point of view, the brain of an ant is one of the most marvelous atoms of matter in the world, perhaps more so than the brain of man;" -Charles Darwin, " The Descent of Man."

Charley, I tend to agree with you. We both have ant brains, you and I.

  2. Crazy video on ants and their underground labyrinth civilizations. Scientists pump a colony with concrete and excavate it relieving the awesomeness of the colony and the creator.

  3. It is amazing how they have such a sophisticated tunneling system with ventilation shafts created for specific kinds of ventilation. It really is a wonder to behold. autonomous nano technology swarms is an interesting label. I'll have to look that one up.

  4. http://ants.gsfc.nasa.gov/- Straight out of a Michael Crichton novel.

The nanobots in the ANTS program work collectively to store bits of information (almost like neurons in a brain). Alone, they are useless, but in the tens of thousands, they can store a substantial amount of information and do some pretty useful work. Pretty cool, but I like the real ants better.
